Product Quality

In 1975 Garlock USA through Garlock Inc. distribution Asia established Garlock Philippines Inc. to manufacture Garlock gland packings and gaskets in the Philippines. In 1983 the company was sold and the name changed to American Packing Industries Corporation, and it became a Licensee of Garlock Sealing Technologies USA.

American Packing Industries is the leading manufacturer of compressed gaskets and packings with more than 40 years experience. In 1998, it achieved its ISO 9002 Certification from SGS Yarsley International Certification Services Ltd. and migrated to ISO9001:2000 in 2003, and currently certified under ISO 9001:2008.

GarraSeals gland packings and gaskets are manufactured to the highest quality for PT. Gapura Raya by American Packing Industries Corporation.

Material Aramid yarn PTFE Filament PTFE Carbon Fibre Carbon Fibre PTFE-Graphite Asbestos PTFE Asbestos with Wire Asbestos Graphite
Application High pressure applications or where poor shaft bearing support is found A non-toxic, firm, high density PTFE Filament Packing. Excellent food process packing A firm braided expanded PTFE packing resistant to most chemicals Treated with PTFE to prevent colour contamination and carbon migration. Each individual strand of the carbon yarn is impregnated with PTFE and high temperature lubricant to provide excellent break-in qualities Manufactured from highest quality Carbon Fibre Packing is a favourite in many applications. Features long life, low coefficient of friction Packing manufactured from fine particles of graphite entrapped with an expanded PTFE and silicone break-in lubricants White asbestos which has been thoroughly impregnated with PTFE, braided into the lattice braid construction, and then given a final treatment with a special run-in lubricant Asbestos fibers with zinc/graphite powder core. The core itself is flexible and resilient, while the total packing offers lubricity, long shelf life and high corrosion resistance. High quality white asbestos yarn with wire reinforcement are braided over the square cross-section of this product. A petrolatum and graphite lubricant totally saturates the white asbestos yarn+J6 this square braid packing. These lubricants are combined with the packing's softness for a universal packing that is particularly suited for equipment that is aged or suffering from worn bearings and scored shafts

Seals General Information

A seal is any object that is placed between two surfaces to prevent leakage. There are two basic type of industrial seals.

  • Gaskets : A gasket is used between two stationary objects
  • Packings : A packing is used between two moving objects
  • Compression Packings

    What is a Packing?

    • FSA - a soft pliant material cut into a number of rings which are inserted into the stuffing box between the rotating or reciprocating member and the body of the pump or valve
    • ASME - a deformable material used to prevent or control the passage of a fluid between surfaces that move in relation to each other
    • API - a dynamic seal

    Base Materials of Packings

    • Plant Fibers (flax, cotton, ramie)
    • Mineral Fiber (asbestos)
    • Teflon
    • Aramids (nomex, kevlar)
    • Carbon Yarns
    • Graphite Yarn
    • Glass Fiber
    • Lubricants (mica, graphite, grease, teflon, silicone, oil, etc)
    • Metallics (lead, copper, inconel, aluminum)

    Where is it used?

    • Centrifugal / Reciprocating / Rotary Pumps and Valves
    • Industries: paper, petrochemical, steel, marine, refineries, mining, etc.
    • Seals: steam, water, acids, alkalis, solvents, oils and gases

    What Does It Do?

Packings prevents excessive leakage, it does not STOP leak!

    Special Packings

    • Polymide packing
    • Synthetic packing with PTFE
    • Synthetic packing with graphite
    • Custom Made Packings : YOU TELL US WHAT YOU NEED & WE WILL GET IT FOR YOU

Graphite filled PTFE and kevlar packing in a zig-zag > a packing that combines chemical resistance and good heat transfer with built in pressure & extrusion resistance. Service Temperature: 260°C, Pressure: 500 psi, Shaft Speed: 3800 fpm

PTFE Graphite with Kevlar corners for applications with high peripheral speed - paper mill stock pumps, agitators, etc. Temperature: 271°C, Pressure: 500 psi, Shaft Speed: 1970 fpm

    How to order a packing?
    • Size
    • Temperature
    • Application
    • Media
    • Pressure
    • Shaft Speed

    Packing Installation

    • Remove ALL the old packing
    • Clean stuffing box thoroughly
    • Determine correct packing size
    • Check number of rings required
    • Cut and install packing
    • Gland follower should penetrate the box an amount equal to approximately 1/2 the packing cross section
    • Tighten gland - finger tight
    • Adjust bolts for acceptable leakage 5 minutes time

    Total Program

    • Inventory Reduction
    • Increased Availability
    • Decreased Total Plant Cot
    • Longer Product Life
    • Greater Reliability
    • Reduced Downtime
    • Less Product Loss

    Packing Commandment

Overtightening is the greatest single casue of packing failure - adjust packing don’t tighten it!
